About this part
A crankshaft is the most demanding part we make. The casting has to be sound all the way through, because a pore in a journal fillet will find the engine eventually, and every journal then has to be turned and finished to size with its oil ways drilled through. The counterweights stay as-cast. We pour it in SG iron, where the spheroidal graphite gives the fatigue strength a crankshaft lives on.
How we make it
- Sand cast in SG (ductile) iron
- Main and crankpin journals turned and finished to size
- Oil holes drilled through to the journals
- Flywheel flange and nose turned
- Dimensional and soundness checks; laboratory testing arranged outside when a drawing calls for it
Can you make a crankshaft for an engine that is no longer supported?
That is exactly the case we are set up for. Send the old crankshaft, even a broken one, and we will measure it and work from there.
Do you grind the journals?
Journals are turned and finished to size here. Tell us the finish your engine builder needs and we will confirm what we can hold before you order.
